Week 3: All the way to Alabama

Flower Mound, Texas to Louisiana, to Mississippi, and all the way to Alabama. We had some “driving with a trailer” firsts on our way this week including first tunnel (Mobile, AL) and first extended bridge crossing (Mobile Bay, AL). The bridge was definitely more nerve-wracking than the tunnel. We made it to Gulf Shores! And with a few days to spare before Thanksgiving. Phew!

Gulf State Beach

We are staying at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores. I was a bit intimidated by it when making our reservation, because it is huge with nearly 500 campsites. But, the park is spread over a large area. The sites are all nicely spaced out and there is greenery between them creating a bit of separation. The park amenities are also very nice with an extensive network of accessible trails, including many elevated wooden boardwalks, for walking and biking to the beach, a lake, a handful of restaurants, and through peaceful maritime forest and intertidal flats that chirp with frogs and birds. We have note yet seen an alligator which makes me both happy and disappointed.

The park is also nearby to Neal’s family and we have been enjoying the close proximity to get together for beach time, walks, meals and games. We even had Neal’s parents over for dinner one night at the trailer - our first dinner party! We are appreciating family time including Thanksgiving together, the warm sunshine (three cheers for flipflops and shorts!) and being settled in one spot for a few weeks.

Mickey McFuzzles digs the sunshine.

More on Alabama next week. For now, the week’s stats:

GOOD THING | Sunshine!! Rest time!! Family time!!

BAD THING | Highway-side RV “park” in Baton Rouge.

CRAZY THING | We drove all the way to Alabama.

GRAND TOTAL | 2,586 miles (714 this week + 1,872 previously)
